“I began cooking at the age of 5,” said Tom Boggs, owner of Old Souls Food Truck based in Lufkin, Texas. “As a kid with terrible asthma, it was about all I could do. I’d pull a chair up beside my mother and we cooked together.”
So began the journey that would take 50 years. Through high school and college, marriage and two kids, Tom would never quite escape that first passion. Holding down jobs as manager of restaurants and sales and firefighter and yes, youth pastor, Tom was known for cooking and cooking well.
At the age of 55, he decided to begin the journey of operating a food truck. Lucky for him, it combines the two things he’s comfortable with: food and people. “I love to create food that brings people together,” he said. “We need community and nothing brings down borders more quickly than food.”
ROSIEBELLE
The 1961 Flexible Southern Company truck seemed to have followed Tom’s journey, beginning life as a Salvation Army disaster relief soup truck. She did a few other things before donning her new personna and was a far cry from her gorgeous good looks today.
“I remember telling Dad we need to keep going,” said Misty Boggs, Tom’s daughter who went with him to look at the truck in North Austen. “It was so cold, and it was snowing. When we drove by, I just shook my head and said, ‘Keep moving.'” Tom stopped anyway.
“All the way in, we had talked about tattoos and what I would like to get,” said Misty. “Its a weird combination, but I wanted a mashup between Rosie the Riverter and Tinkerbell” Both Tom and Misty knew something was happening when, dangling from the keychain, was Tinkerbell.
“So, she quickly became Rosiebelle,” said Tom, summing up a journey between owner and truck, and maybe even humanity, with these words. “With a lot of hard work, and a little bit of magic, anything is possible.”
…MORE, PLEASE!
No food truck can survive on it’s own. Well, at least Tom believes that is true. Needing a docking station, Tom joined forces with Big Thicket Brewery. This symbiotic relationship provided food for for the hungry and a watering hole for the thirsty soul.
No journey is complete and Tom is grateful for the many fans who have joined Old Souls on its journey to bigger and better. Tom would like to thank those who have helped through brain, brawn, finances or a combination of all three.
